Presidential poll ends, government and opposition brace for July 20

NEW DELHI: The voting process to elect India’s 14th President ended today at 5 pm at Parliament House in New Delhi and across State assemblies, with an overwhelming majority of the electoral college members having cast their vote.

Voting was held in 32 polling stations — one in Parliament House and one each across State legislative assemblies.

The polling started at 10 a.m., with PM Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah casting their votes. 

A total of 776 MPs and 4,120 MLAs were eligible to vote. The total value of votes of the electoral college is 10,98,903.

The ballot boxes from the states will be brought to Delhi for final counting on July 20. Results will be declared that day.

NDA’s candidate Ram Nath Kovind , the former Bihar governor has an advantage over Opposition candidate Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker, as the numbers are stacked heavily in favour of the ruling NDA.

Incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee demits office on July 25.

5: 20 pm

The voting for the presidential poll in Assam today was completed more than three hours before the time limit. “The voting went very peacefully and there was no issue at all. Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta voted last at around 1:40 pm,” the principal secretary to Assam assembly Mrigendra Kumar Deka said. (PTI)

All the 175 MLAs in Andhra Pradesh exercised their franchise in the presidential election today.The polling took place smoothly at the committee hall in the AP Legislature building at Velagapudi. (PTI)

Sixty seven legislators in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh assembly voted here in the Presidential election on Monday, officials said. One ailing Congress legislator had passed away. (IANS)

Some heated moments were witnessed in the West Bengal Assembly during the Presidential polls on Monday after a ruling Trinamool Congress legislator lashed out at the GJM counterparts for setting Darjeeling “ablaze” and attacked state BJP president Dlip Ghosh for “escorting” them to the house. The voting for the presidential election concluded at the state secretariat in Gujarat capital Gandhinagar today with 180 out of total 182 members of the Gujarat Assembly having exercised their franchise. BJP president Amit Shah, who represents Naranpura seat of Ahmedabad, cast his vote in Delhi, while the lone JD(U) MLA, Chhotu Vasava, refrained from voting as a mark of protest. (PTI)

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Ramesh Chennithala and legislators from the state cast their vote in the presidential election at Thiruvananthapuram today. (PTI)

4: 20 pm

The voting for the presidential election ended in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly premises today with 228 legislators casting their votes. (PTI)

4: 15 pm

All the 81 elected MLAs of Jharkhand Assembly today cast their votes to elect the 14th president of the country. The NDA polling agent at the Jharkhand Assembly polling station and Urban Development and Transport Minister C P Singh told media, all the 81 elected MLAs had exercised their franchise by 1.30 pm. The cracks in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are wide in open, as few of the party MLAs from Tripura voted for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Ram Nath Kovind in the Presidential election, while others backed Opposition candidate Meira Kumar. (ANI). (READ MORE)

Voting concluded in the Rajasthan Assembly today, with 199 legislators out of 200 exercising their franchise. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot cast his vote in Gujarat. (PTI)

Thirty four legislators in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly voted for the presidential election till 1.30pm today, assistant returning officer for the polls S R Zokhuma said. (PTI)

The legislators of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly today cast their votes. Of the total 59 members in a house of 60, 58 exercised their franchise. Health and Family Welfare minister Jomde Kena did not cast his vote  in state capital Itanagar as he was in Delhi. (PTI)

The differences in the Samajwadi Party came to the fore as senior party leader Shivpal Yadav said over 15 legislators including himself have voted for NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind. In the state assembly to vote, Shivpal, the uncle of party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, said “his vote will also go to Kovind as ‘Neta ji’ (Mulayam Singh Yadav) had ordered so”. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar and senior Akali leader Parkash Singh Badal were among those who cast their votes for the presidential poll at  Chandigarh today. (PTI)

1: 55 pm

Voting for the presidential election was underway at the West Bengal Assembly with several legislators casting their votes. Subrata Mukherjee, Rajiv Banerjee, Shashi Panja and Lakshmi Ratan Shukla were among the prominent Trinamool Congress MLAs to cast their votes. CPI(M) legislator Sujan Chakraborty and Congress MLA Manoj Mukherjee also exercised their voting rights for the presidential elections which began at 10 am in the 295-member state Assembly. The TMC, CPI(M) and Congress’ have already expressed support to Opposition nominee, Meira Kumar. Hundred per cent polling was recorded in the voting for the presidential election in Himachal with all 67 MLAs casting their vote. One seat is lying vacant in the 68-member House following death of Congress MLA Karan Singh. MLAs of both ruling Congress and opposition BJP gathered at 10:00 AM in the Vidhan Sabha and the polling started on a brisk note with Chief Parliamentary Secretary I D Lakhanpal the first to cast his vote. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, leader of the Opposition Narasingha Mishra and BJP legislature party leader K V Singhdeo cast their votes for the presidential poll at state capital Bhubaneswar today. The other early voters were K V Singhdeo, legislator from Patnagarh, Basant Panda, BJP state unit president and former union minister Dilip Ray. Voting for the presidential election began at the Goa secretariat at Porvorim today morning with chief minister Manohar Parrikar among those to cast vote in the first one hour. Apart from Parrikar, Goa Forward Party’s Jayesh Salgaoncar and Vinod Palyekar, Congress’ Philip Neri Rodrigues, Ravi Naik, Digambar Kamat and Tony Fernandes, and BJP’s Pramod Sawant and Pravin Zantye were among the early voters.
